Diabetes - Why You Should Not Take This Disease For Granted

Diabetes develops when the pancreatic cells producing insulin, the hormone which manages blood glucose in our body, produces insufficient insulin and tissues in our body become resistant to the normal function of insulin. This condition increases blood sugar levels which can lead to a lot of complications such as cardiovascular health risk problems and blindness. Today, millions and millions of people already got diabetes and the number is still continuously increasing spiking up to 24 Million cases in just the US alone. This is why it is very important for us to monitor our sugar levels and know which diabetes treatment will best suit our condition.

Diabetes is not something that you can get while strolling outside in the park. You can develop diabetes if you are at risk for it. Risk factors for diabetes include family history of diabetes, obesity, or lifestyle risks such as poor diet and smoking. If you are worried about diabetes, then you should start checking out the risks that I have mentioned.

If it is confirmed that you have diabetes, it is imperative that you be aware of the diabetes and its symptoms. Diabetes is a silent disease and therefore you may not immediately notice that you have one. As the diseases progresses, symptoms such as frequent urination, excessive thirst and increased appetite usually manifest. As the disease advances, blurring of vision, erectile dysfunction, pain, abscesses or urinary tract infection usually occur. You may also notice that you often have cold or cough. This is because when you have diabetes, you are susceptible to infections, most commonly pneumonia.

Diabetes should not be taken for granted. You have to see a doctor immediately for proper consultation regarding your diabetes status and diabetes treatment. He will ask you to have certain laboratory test such as the fasting blood glucose level and Hemoglobin A1C test (HbA1C). The latter test is used to monitor how effective your blood glucose control is as the result of this laboratory test indicates your glucose level during the past three months.
You can also buy your own glucometer kit for daily monitoring of your sugar level.

Diabetes is a serious disease with a lot of serious complications. It is advised that once you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you have to immediately consult your doctor. He should be able to guide you with what kind of diabetes treatment you will need and how you can manage your disease well.
